On August 2, 2017, the Directors of social centres gathered at St. Ignatius House in the Africa North West Province (ANW), Lagos, Nigeria, for their annual meeting.

They were hosted by Fr. Patrick Etamesor, SJ the coordinator of Social Apostolates in the ANW Province. The Provincial ANW, Fr. Chuks Afiawari, SJ, was also present to welcome the participants.

The agenda was to allow social apostolate delegates from the provinces and regions share their status reports on their performance, followed by an annual report and strategic plan from the Directors of social centres.

The JESAM President, Fr. Orobator SJ, present at the meeting had this to say to the delegates: The world is changing, and not necessarily for the better: there are too many people who still cannot live in dignity and freedom, like refugees, migrants, IDPs, the poor and the marginalized. So there is a strong raison d'être for the social apostolate. The question is what new and innovative ways do we have to do the work that we do? Are we going to keep using the same tools in a changing environment? The future calls us to be innovative, make strategic and smart choices. One smart option is networking: that's what we say we are and why we have gathered here. But what does that mean in fact? Do we effectively network? Do we effectively collaborate? Do well pull our collective resources, strengths, and resources toward effective apostolic action across the continent? The world needs our ministry, but to make a difference we have to be willing to do things differently – strategically, innovatively, and smartly.

The meeting concluded with a dinner on Saturday August 5, 2017.
