JESAM Treasurers Meeting: South Africa
By: Fr Bruce Botha SJ, Secretary to JESTRAM
The Treasurers of JESAM met in South Africa from Monday 3 April to Friday 7 April. The JESAM President Fr. Orobator SJ, attended the meeting.
Our sharing showed us that all the provinces and regions of JESAM have all been negatively affected by the global economic downturn, in addition to many being affected by local political instability. It highlighted for us the challenge of having to do more, with less, as well as the responsibility we have to be wise stewards of the resources which the Society, through our Major Superiors, entrust to our care.
Over the course of our meeting we discussed ways in which we can support the growth and development of the common houses, as well as stand in solidarity with one another in terms of formation costs. I have seldom seen a more hard working group than this group of treasurers.
After each evening's social the treasurers would retreat to the conference room and work an additional few hours. As one treasurer wryly said, it looks like treasurers are the nerds of the Society. It wasn't all work as our relaxation day was spent at a local museum, the Sterkfontein Caves, learning about the evolution of humanity from its African cradle, as well as surveying the beauty of Haartebespoort Dam, located near the conference Centre we held the meeting at.
